CEO inspects refurbished trains for Benalla

The Council CEO Tony McIlroy has inspected the first refurbished and reconfigured train set that will soon be in operation on the Melbourne to Albury service.

Mr McIlroy inspected the train at the Downer Rail facility in Newport along with other Local Government Mayors and CEOs at the invitation of Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes.

The service will include four trains of four carriages, two of which will be in operation at any one time. One set will be on stand-by and one set will be undergoing maintenance. The trains can be configured to suit passenger load and seasonal requirements.

"It is pleasing to see progress on the matter of improving passenger rail services to north-east Victoria with this first train having new seats and being repainted," Mr McIlroy said.

"It is understood that the remaining three train sets will be refurbished over the next 12 months.

"The state of the current system is recognised as a priority issue for the region by different levels of Government.

"The refurbished trains will be an improvement on the current trains as an interim measure and in time, we look forward to a complete upgrade to new rolling fleet. "The next item that that needs addressing is the standard and suitability of the track, which is a Federal Government issue."
