Benalla Art Gallery
The Benalla Art Gallery is one of Victoria’s premier regional art galleries. The striking modernist building overlooks Lake Benalla and the Benalla Botanical Gardens. The Benalla Art Gallery is owned and operated by Benalla Rural City Council, and supported by the Victorian Government through the Creative Victoria Regional Partnerships Program.
The Benalla Art Gallery was constructed in 1975. A generous donation by a local benefactor, Mr Laurie Ledger, of 25 percent of the construction costs and his collection of fine Australian art, was rewarded with his choice of gallery site and architect.
The Gallery presents a diverse, high quality exhibition program to inspire and engage audiences. Exhibitions are supported by a dynamic range of public programs of workshops, talks and events designed to provide a direct experience and deeper understanding of making and thinking about art. The permanent collection includes works spanning three centuries of Australian art.
The Benalla Art Gallery is an important tourist attraction for Benalla Rural City, drawing people with its iconic architecture, nationally renowned art collection, significant exhibitions, one of Benalla’s best cafés, and the gallery gift shop.
