Rec-Less, Less Water, Less Often
Benalla Rural City is likely to have less water available in the future to irrigate open spaces due to climate change.
Trees, gardens and turf areas may have to cope with high winds and a higher rainfall run-off. We need to ensure open spaces are resilient to stress and shocks to avoid significant maintenance costs.
The RecLess: Less Water, Less Often, More Resilient Open Spaces Project was a partnership project between the Alpine Shire Council and Benalla Rural City Council, supported through funding from the Victorian Government through the Victorian Adaptation and Sustainability Partnership.
RecLess ensures species planted in open spaces are hardy and resilient to the effects of climate change and that these spaces are prioritised for irrigation.
The project created demonstration gardens to showcase features that make gardens more resilient to impacts of climate change. If you want to view some hardy plant species, take a stroll along Bridge Street, Benalla, where resilient species have been planted.
