Local Government Act

In Victoria, the main legislation governing the operation of local councils are the Local Government Act 1989 and the Local Government Act 2020  (the Acts) along with various Regulations made under the Acts.

The Acts define the purposes and functions of local government as well as provide the legal framework for establishing and administering Councils.
