Construction is about to begin on a multi-purpose community recreation pavilion at the Arundel Street Sports Ovals.
The pavilion will include changerooms with internally accessible toilets, showers and storage, externally accessible toilets, a kiosk, a covered spectator viewing.
The $605,000 project has received $500,000 from the Victorian Government, $50,000 from both the Council and the Benalla and District Junior Football League and $5,000 from the Benalla Bushrangers Cricket Club.
Mayor, Councillor Danny Claridge said the project will provide improved amenity for a wide range of user groups.
“That we have been able to develop this project in a partnership between the Victorian Government, the Council and two of Benalla’s major sporting clubs is a testament to how valuable this project is. We also thank the Benalla Showgrounds and Recreation Reserve Committee of Management and the Benalla Agricultural and Pastoral Society for their involvement,” Cr Claridge said.
“We are grateful to all the funding bodies and look forward to the sporting community being able to take full benefit of these facilities.” he said.
“I grew up playing sport in Benalla and know firsthand that community sport is a huge part of country living; Benalla deserves the best possible sporting facilities to support that,” said Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes.
“Construction starting at Arundel Street is not only an exciting milestone for our sporting clubs, but is a great creator of regional construction jobs,” she said.
President, Benalla and District Junior Football League Darren Skelton said the Club is looking forward to the project being completed later this year.
“It’s incredibly exciting to see the first stages of the construction of the new multi-purpose facility commence,” Mr Skelton said.
“Now more than ever we need to provide modern facilities for young people to reconnect with sport and their local communities.
“We are thrilled to be able to make a substantial contribution to this important project and look forward to its completion later this year.”
