Benalla Rural City Council has welcomed a $15 million funding announcement from the Victorian Labor Party today to upgrade the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre (BIRC).
State Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes, was in Benalla this morning making the announcement as part of the 2023 Victorian Budget.
Jaclyn said the State Government funding will help to rebuild the centre, including a better stadium, new amenities, and female friendly change rooms.
Benalla Rural City Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn welcomed the funding announcement.
“This will make Benalla one of the best sporting areas in the north-east,” Cr Hearn said.
“The new stadium will cater for a range of sports.
“We also have a top equestrian centre right next to our exceptional racecourse.
“We have two great football clubs in town. We have excellent cricket facilities and our tennis courts are amazing.
“People will be able to come here for just about any sport.”
Cr Hearn said council had been campaigning for funding for the BIRC for a long time.
She said Council had continued to support the committee and volunteers to advocate for funding to redevelop this important community asset.
