Draft Climate and Environment Strategy open for community feedback

Following the Council meeting held on Wednesday 29 May 2024, Benalla Rural City Council is pleased to announce the release of its Draft Climate and Environment Strategy 2024-2029 for public exhibition. The strategy is now open for community feedback for a period of at least 28 days.
The draft Climate and Environment Strategy outlines the proactive and strategic approach to environment and climate change and identifies priorities for management for Benalla Rural City over the next five years. It is designed to be realistic, achievable, and adaptable to evolving technologies and resources.
Mayor Cr Danny Claridge expressed his enthusiasm for the strategy, highlighting the importance for Council to adopt the Draft Climate and Environment Strategy into the daily running of the organisation and our community.
“This draft strategy is a crucial step forward in our commitment to addressing climate change and enhancing environmental sustainability within our community. It outlines the guiding principles and objectives that will shape our approach over the next five years,” Cr Claridge said.
The Climate and Environment Strategy aims to align with the carbon reduction goals established by the Victorian and Federal Governments. The Victorian Government has committed to reaching net zero emissions by 2045, placing significant responsibilities on local councils to promote economic, social, and environmental sustainability while addressing climate change risks.
“It details the specific actions we will take to mitigate environmental impacts from our operations and to support the broader community in adopting sustainable practices.”
Council is inviting community members to review the draft strategy and provide their input online by visiting www.haveyoursay.benalla.vic.gov.au
Alternatively, you can access hard copies of the draft strategy at the Customer Service Centre or Benalla Library, with submissions also being accepted by email to council@benalla.vic.gov.au in-person at the Customer Service Centre, or mail it to: Benalla Rural City Council, PO Box 227 Benalla VIC 3671.
