Important kerbside collection tips for Benalla Rural City residents

14 March 2025

Council is reminding all residents of the steps they can take to ensure the seamless operation of the kerbside waste and recycling collection service.

With everyone’s cooperation, we can maintain an efficient, reliable system that benefits the entire community.

Mayor Cr Bernie Hearn emphasised that small actions by residents can make a big difference in keeping our service running smoothly and minimising disruptions.

“It’s important that we all do our part to make kerbside waste collection as effective as possible,” Cr Hearn said.

“By following a few simple guidelines, we’re not just supporting our waste collection partner, but we’re also helping to keep our streets clean and our community safe.”

To assist residents in maintaining good kerbside collection practices, please:

Put your bins out on time

To ensure your waste is collected, please place your kerbside bins out on the street the night before your scheduled service day. Bins may not be emptied if they are put out on collection day.

Provide adequate spacing

Where possible, please space bins at least one metre apart. This simple step helps collection vehicles operate without delays or mishaps.

Avoid compacting your waste

Compacting your bins might seem handy, but it can cause them to be only partially emptied. It’s best to allow contents to remain loose for thorough emptying.

Keep kerbside bins for domestic waste only

Please remember that building waste is not permitted in kerbside bins. They are exclusively for domestic waste, recycling and organic matter.

Reduce organics bin odour

Lining the bottom of your organics bin with newspaper can help keep it cleaner and reduce odour. This simple tip can make managing organic waste a much more pleasant task.

Dispose of batteries responsibly

Batteries, whether household or vehicle types, should never be disposed of in kerbside bins as they pose a serious fire hazard. Household batteries can be dropped off for free at most local supermarkets, Vinnie’s stores, or the Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre. Vehicle batteries can also be disposed of at the Benalla Landfill and Resource Recovery Centre.

Residents are encouraged to download the BRCC Waste app to stay informed and organised. The app provides collection day reminders, important waste notices, and a comprehensive A-Z guide to help you determine what goes in which bin.

Available on the Apple App Store and Google Play, this handy resource makes disposing of waste correctly quicker and easier for everyone.

“By adopting these simple measures, we can reduce the number of service disruptions and unnecessary customer complaints. More importantly, it means our community receives reliable, sustained waste and recycling services,” Cr Hearn said.

The Council thanks all residents for their ongoing efforts to support this vital service. Together, we can continue to build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable region for everyone.
